From: Mags Subject: playoffs Forget football for awhile. Baseball is at its best right now. The Indians-Yanks series was a classic October duel. Very exciting to see Cleveland pull it together in the last two games. My former Bomber Justice met his match with Stanton. In Sunday's game Stanton whizzed 3 straight corner-catchin steamers by the mesmerized slugger- strikeout looking at 3 in a row. O'Neill is a real hustler; I may have to re-sign him for next year. Sandy Alomar is THE Alomar this year- put the Indians in the playoffs in these last two games. And all of a sudden, they have some pitching too. Wright looks like an impact pitcher for next year too. Hershiser doesn't want to quit just yet. League playofffs are looking to be tense struggles. I think a Braves-Tribe rematch would be wonderful, especially with the early season trade as backdrop. Forget football. I am surprised, though, to see you take the loss of your NY Yankees to = philisophically. I guess I was getting caught up in their mystique from = last year, and when O'Neill managed to get into second last night w/ = that gutsy slide (Ouch!), I would've bet $100 that Bernie Williams would = tie the game. He kinda blew the drama of the moment by going after the = first pitch... nothing like the Mookie Wilson at bat in 1986, that's for = sure. If Bernie planned on re-signing w/ the Yanks, he had best realize that = AB, coming on the heels of a 2-14 series w/ no impact at all, will cost = him a million or two. I laugh when fans put him in an elite category. = He's good, he can play on my team, but he is no upper echelon = ballpalyer. Like the Mets in '88 (God, I'm not living TOO MUCH in the past, am I?), = the Series was lost before the deciding fifth game. For the Mets that = year, it was Sciosia taking Gooden deep in the ninth in game 4; this = year, it was Alomar going yard on Rivera in the eighth inning of game 4. Albert ********************************************************************* From: Mags Subject: RE: playoffs Naw, I'm no Yankees fan. I appreciate some of their great teams, players, and accomplishments over the years but they got to be very prima-donna'ish in the 70's-80's. I enjoy watching them now 'cause they hustle and I like poker-faced Torre. For the 17 years I lived in the Wash-Balt area I rooted for the Os, to no avail. Big bunch of underachievers. I'm warming up to the Braves and I would like to see them victorious this year. Maybe I should have a totally new name for my cyberteam next year, so as not to imply any connection or sympatico with the Bronx Bombers or, ironically, with the local Class A Mets farm team, the Capital City Bombers. The name fit this year's team because of its ambivalent meaning, ultimately landing on the slang verb meaning "to fail utterly". The Washinton Bullets changed their image (hopefully) this year, becoming the Wizards. I'm open to suggestions for my "new" team name next year. I kind of liked "ex-feds", maybe the ExFed Rockcrushers. Albert you are right. Shades of Dodgers over Mets in '88. Up 2-1 and looking to close out the series with your closer in the 8th. Ooops, there's a long fly ball... What delightful torture for Yankee fans to see the tying run die out on second in the ninth with B. Williams at the plate. Wade Boggs was made for that moment, but... What was with all the quick Yankee hitting there in the ninth? First or second pitch and out. Did the Boys have a plane to catch or something? About the Irish. Man, am I glad that LA Tech or Toledo aren't on this year's schedule. Imagine a bout with Florida... Albert you may disagree, but coaching be damned, the Irish talent level just isn't what it was. When was the last time an Irish player was taken in the top 15 of the NFL draft? You think any of this year's crop will be in that category? On the bright side I see that Michigan and Michigan State are in the nation's top 10 in scoring defense, each at about 10 points/game . The Irish scored more than that on each of those teams! J
