The Masters 2024 Day 1 Deja Vu all over again.... Charlie won the first event of the year, and now he takes Day 1 honors at the Masters. I saw only a little of the action during the day yesterday, but know the winds were a huge factor in pushing most of the scores way up. DeChambeau's leading 65 helped Fox into a share of 2nd place day one. I was shocked to see Brian Harman of the Red Foxes post an 81. Next low on Day 1 was Scottie Scheffler. No surprise. I'll be Al was expecting a big day, but was later disappointed to have Jordan Spieth post a 79, and Jason Day fall back to a +2 74. Don't worry Al, your 288 is not too far off the lead. On the other end of the scores, Ikey's Heros posted the high at 294, with my Holes not far ahead at 292. Ikey had to be disappointed with Dustin Johnson, a former winner here, post a 78! I share that concern as my former winner, Hideki Matsuyama posted 76. Really??? I'd say the tournament is still there for the taking to anyone who was at Even Par or better day 1. Time will tell. Enjoy the action! Hans Day 2 The winner on Friday was definitely the course due to the wind. Brutal conditions. Only 8 of 89 players were under par, and only one shot in the 60's - Gabes' Aberg, who is playing Augusta for the first time! More observations later. Charlie's Calaways still hold the lead and have 4 going this weekend. The day belonged to Mags' Mulligans who posted the low score of the day, placing them in second place overall. 4 Mulligans play the weekend. Only one team - Sobo's Pinseekers, have all 5 still playing. Other teams with 4: Foreskins, Ace Holes, Smoothies. 3: Dimpled Balls and Hagen's Heroes. Sadly, the Red Foxes have only 2 still playing. Say g'night, Fox. I was able to watch some, but not all of the action today. Those who demonstrated the best short games around the green scored the best as so many missed the greens in regulation due to the wind. Here are the scores today of some past Masters winners: Garcia 79 Bubba Watson 80 Chas Schwartzel 81 Dustin Johnson 79 and for good measure, we can't forget Jordan Spieth's 9 on #15 yesterday... The cut line, fortunately, went to +6 late in the day. Fortunately because my player and former Masters winner, Hideki Matsuyama, barely made it on the number. If you are watching the Masters.com feed tomorrow or Sunday, I suggest you watch the coverage of 15 and 16, or Amen Corner. This gets you every player, not just the leaders... Next week is Hilton Head, a signature event. This will have all the top players in attendance. If you are depressed by your team this weekend, you can look ahead and see who is in the field at Hilton Head. I did take a peek at the CyberZahm results so far this weekend.... and am glad we made the rules change to allow all team players to participate. Enjoy the action tomorrow. Hans Day 3 More of the same.... by that I mean Scottie continues to lead the tournament and Chuck continues to win the daily and lead the pool! Day 3 saw the #82 shot TWO times by players in the pool, as well as by some guy named Woods. Shocking. This score only cost Fox, but we knew he was screwed anyway. Chuck leads the overall by 4 over Mags, 10 over Sobo and 12 over Hans. There needs to be an earthquake type influence for the order to change after tomorrow, but you never know... that's why they play the games. I had the pleasure of playing this afternoon with my grandson Luke. (he shot 80, I had 85) At one point, he was checking his phone, like all normal teenagers and told me that Nicolai H from Denmark was in the lead. I get home and don't see his name anywhere near the top. Then I checked and saw that he posted 5 consecutive bogies. That sure will screw up a round! Fortunately I was home the last 30 minutes and saw DeChambeau's hole out from 150 yards for birdie on #18. Now that was impressive! As for who has the best chance tomorrow... that has to be Scottie. Who do I think will win... the guy with twice as many majors as Scottie.... Colon Morikawa. He is so steady. Anyway, enjoy Sunday at the Masters. The BEST television golf of the season. Hans Day 4 If there was any doubt about the #1 player in the world, Scottie Scheffler provided all the answers on his way to a second green jacket. Congrats Scottie. Day 4 had better scoring overall than previous days. When the dust settled, Jack and Al tied for top honors, both with a score of 208. (and yes, Al, I did see your note on SW Kim after doing yesterday's report. His score has been added for Days 3 and 4.) Charlie held the lead, with Mags taking second. Jack's comeback got him 3rd place, a mere 2 strokes better than both Al and Sobo. The winnings breakdown is at the end of this email. As for commentary on the day, I was excited when late in the front 9, there were 4 golfers tied for the lead at -6. Then, one by one, every golfer in the lead not named Scheffler screwed up. Morikawa said in the post round interview that he got too 'greedy' on both 9 and 11. Oops. double bogies. Ludvig Aberg showed a lack of experience on the 11th hole when he went for the green only to dump his ball in the water ahead of the green. Tiger doesn't take those chances. And Homa was in the hunt until a weird bounce at the back of #12 put his ball in the flowers necessitating an unplayable lie and a penalty... Double bogie later.... he never recovered. Scottie, on the other hand, was super cool, making numerous birdies heading home. Very impressive. Unfortunately for the fans, there was no drama. That's a wrap. See you next at the US Open at Pinehurst. Hans
