US Open 2020 Day 1 Winged Foot is absolutely beautiful! Love the tough rough, manicured fairways and huge, rolling greens. The combination brought the cream to the top, and sent the rest for an evening of trying to figure out how they can change and make the cut. Congrats to Gabes' team, taking Day 1 honors with a fantastic 338. All 5 golfers were at Par or better. Ikey's 344 took 2nd with four or five at par or better, and the fifth golfer only one over. Other than Mags and Sobo who were 5 shots back at 349, the others struggled. Pathetic. The Red Foxes are at 359, all others over 360. Jack's boys bring up the rear at 365, a mere 27 shots behind Gabes. I mentioned Phil Mickelson prior to the start of the action. Sadly, Phil shot 79 and will have plenty of time this weekend to do something else, as he will not make the cut. Justin Thomas was stellar with a 65 and others are right on his heals. I expect a different leader after Friday, and the overall winner can be anyone, except Phil and a couple of my guys at 76. Al, please share your observations of Day 1. Hans Day 2 Winged Foot won today. After giving up 20 or so rounds under par in Day 1, only 2 golfers broke par today. The course 'firmed up' and the winds picked up. This equated to scores going up. This morning, I chose not to follow the action, due in large part to three of my team shooting a smooth 76 (+6) yesterday. I was convinced they had shot themselves out of the tournament. To my surprise, two of the three shot even par 70's and will play the weekend, making the cut on the number +6. Gabes' Foreskins again took top honors, this time matched by Sobo's Pinseekers. Both shot 358. More importantly, the Foreskins are the only team to have 6 in action on Saturday and Sunday. 4 teams have 5: Sobo's Pinseekers, Ikey's Hagen's Heroes, Mags' Mulligans and my Ace Holes. The other teams have 2 or 3 - insuring them at least one score of the highest number posted that day. Individually, Patrick Reed leads. Bryson DeChambeau is second, one shot back. Gabes has both. NBC will have to do with no Tiger or Phil this weekend, which is OK with me. I expect more high scores. The winner on Sunday will likely be par, or at best, one under. Al, i hope you watched alot of the actions and can add your color commentary. Hans Winged foot looked even prettier on day two with lots more sunshine and clear skies. However, the clear skies and sunshine were delivered by brisk winds that together firmed up the greens. Golfers were firing at pins on Thursday; on Friday they were getting firm bounces and shots from the rough had little chance of stopping on the green. So no big surprise to see the huge Delta and scoring between Thursday and Friday. Bryson's 68 was low score the day and only two other golfers broke par. US opens at winged foot have always delivered a winner coming in at over par and, despite the leader being -4 going into the weekend, I suspect even par may end up being good enough to win this year. This event marks an unofficial passing of the torch of sorts. It is only the second major event in the last 20+ years that neither Mickelson nor Woods has made the cut while the next generation of stars play on. I would predict that the winner of this event will come from the group that is currently even par better. And there are some within that range who simply don't have what it takes to win the U.S. Open. So I think it comes down to six: Wolf, Xander, Matsuyama, JT, Bryson and Reed. Bryson is going against the grain of traditional U.S. Open strategy. His philosophy is bomb and gouge, hit driver on every hole, flyover dog legs, and if you're in the rough hopefully close enough to the green to use a wedge. So far so good. JT showed some guts on the back nine yesterday, clawing its way back into contention after a dicey start. He is one of the two out of that group who has won a major and will be dangerous over the weekend (much to Sobo's delight, and as good a reason as any to root against him! :-)) Keep your eye on Patrick Reed. His short game yesterday was nothing short of amazing, he got up and down from everywhere. And while his style had been to hook or draw every shot, it appears that he has taught himself how to work the ball in either direction and has become quite proficient at playing the fade with this driver or irons. That can prove to be critical in playing the various dog legs off the tea and finding tucked pins over the weekend. People seem to hate this guy but I've always kinda liked him, especially after his clutch performance in the Ryder Cup. Adding the U.S. Open championship to his masters championship elevates him into the elite of the game. Day 3 IF there was any question which team would win this pool, it ended with play on Saturday. Gabes' Fourskins have the top three in competition, Wolff, DeChambeau and Ooshuizen, while previous leader, Patrick Reed shot a pedestrian 77, leaving him out of the team totals for at least this one day. The Fourskins have an insurmountable 23 shot lead over Sobo's Pinseekers. Only the race for 3rd offers any intrigue. Hagen's Heroes (Ikey) lead the Mulligans (Mags) by 4 shots going into Sunday's final round. Anything can happen. I did see some of the action after getting off the golf course myself on Saturday. Wolff has an unorthodox swing, but he makes such crisp contact that his score (65) Saturday was not a shock. There was one 65 on Thursday, and after that, Justin Thomas shot 73, then 76, placing him waay back from the top spot. Will this 21 year old rookie have the stones to not lose his cool? It would not surprise me if we see a 3 or 4 man fight at the end. I predict DeChambeau takes top honors. We'll see. As for Al's comments. He yesterday wrote: Here's my comment… I am not anxious for the results if you wonder why he said that, the Dimpled Balls are DFL. Oh well Al, you've got the Masters in November, then a new draft to dump your team and get some young studs. Enjoy the golf today. This could be one of the best sports television day in memory. US Open golf final round, NFL, baseball, Stanley Cup final and if your are really bored, the NBA finals probably soccer as well. Have a great day everyone! Hans Great update, Hans. Some additional commentary… Patrick Reed started out well enough and was one under for the round -5 total deep into the front nine. But missing fairways constantly, lost his up-and-down magic. He just doesn't have the swing, it appears, to play out of that rough. And once he got on the bogie train, there was no getting off. It seems that hitting fairways just doesn't matter for the guys who can REALLY bomb it off the tees, and no better witnesses to that then the top two players on the leaderboard, Wolfe and Bryson. Out of 28 fairway opportunities between them, I think that they had no more than six or seven combined. But they hit the ball so far that it allows them to use more lofted clubs out of the rough. Add to that their incredible swing speed… And perhaps more importantly, their more vertical attack angle… And you could see why they can play effectively from the rough. Wolfe had an incredible front nine, -5. That is pretty amazing, he had a real good chance at breaking the U.S. Open scoring record of 63. And he did not play much worse on the back but he did miss three relatively short birdie pts. Bryson steadied the ship after a very rocky start. He was +2 early, played -4 the rest of the way and he missed his share of putts as well. For whatever reason, I have no use for Oosthuizen. And I can't see him hang with the big hitters. Wolff is a great talent… But I really hate that stupid hip swivel of his, and he has a swing plane that only Jim Furyk could love. He is 21 years old, sleeping on the lead for the U.S. Open. And today you will be playing side-by-side with someone who even hits it further and has paid his dues. I'm rooting for Bryson Day 4 Al, I have 'good' news for you. The Dimpled Balls did not finish DFL. In fact, they are T7 with Jack's Smoothies. Andy's Happy Hookers take bottom honors this weekend. Of well, and there is no pay for futility. The real story is the runaway victory by Gabes' Fourskins. They won by 26 over 2nd place Pinseekers (Sobo). They again had the best daily score, and can boast about the overall champion, Bryson DeChambeau. DeChambeau was picked by Al and me to win. He did not disappoint. Will he be the #1 pick for the 2021 season? Time will tell. Overall, Winged Foot won. Conditions were what you expect for a US Open, and the scores were appropriately high (relatively) My player, Munoz, shot 82 today, forcing that score on all those who were cut after Friday. Ouch. Next is the Masters. No blooming azaleas we all expect in April. Nevertheless, Augusta National is such a special place, i expect an exceptional show by the best in the game of golf. Sobo, i assume you are handling the collection and payment for the 3 majors. thats a wrap. Hans Hans, Thanks for another great job, and thanks to Al for his commentary! My Skins were lucky to have 3/4 guys who pretty much played well all tournament. Winged Foot setup was brutal! Great course, and I enjoyed the home house galleries! Fox, please post when time permits! The Masters ends our season in November. There’s something really cool about that in this most unusual year!
