British Open 2019 Albert's Pool Day 1 I assure u... nothing sucks worse than running a pool like this when u have ZERO chance of cashing!!!! And it has happened once again. But my job goes on, and I am happy to report that recovering Andy has taken Day 1. Sobo, 2 behind, beats Mags by 2 to take second place for the day. Gabes and I are sucking wind big time and will likely find other diversions for the weekend. In fact, I have other diversions, traveling to see friends up in Westchester. So reports may be slow, given my general disinterest and other commitments. :-) Day 2 Andy wins again!! Mags, Sobo and Hans all tie for second. Day 3 Andy remains en fuego, as his full 5 man team wins Day 3. Andy he will be as tough to beat as Shane Lowry, the Irishman with the 4 stroke lead, playing in his home country (well, not sure if Northern Ireland and Ireland are considered the same country. I will need to be updated on "The Troubles"..... and better understand how a generally fun loving group like the Irish could rip a country apart and have a decades long civil war over something as stupid as which sect of Christianity one might opt for. Mags 4 man team finished second for Day 3 and adds a little cushion on his hold of second overall. Hans and Ikey…. currently traipsing thru the Far East and doing well in this tourney because I picked his team in absentia.... are tied for the last money slot and 5 behind Mags, with Sobo lurkinf two further back. Once again, I have been running a pool while getting my ass handed to me. I promise u.... it is not fun!!! Day 4 Yawn. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Man, was that a snoozer of a Major. A Ham and Egger, Shane Lowry, breaks thru to win his first major in virtual wire to wire fashion without a shred of drama in the final round. Well, maybe there was a small shred. First hole.... Lowry was up 4 on Fleetwood to start the day. Lowry puts his second in the bunker and hits a lackluster sand shot, leaving about 45 feet for par. Then hits a poor lag to about 7 feet. Meanwhile, Fleetwood is 8 feet away for birdie. He makes and Lowry misses, it would be a three stroke swing and game on! Instead, Fleetwood misses, Lowry makes. And then Lowry birdies #2, back to 4 strokes, and never looks back and cruises to a one over round and 6 stroke win. None of the "studs" in the hunt did jack schitt to make a move. Fleetwood 74. Koepka 74 Fowler 74 Rahm 75 and Rose 79. Our pool mirrored the tourney, as Andy went out to an early lead, and no one could challenge him despite his lackluster 4th round. But we did have some interesting action. Sobo tied for the best round of the day, besting Ikey by 3, and slipping past Ikey by one stroke for third place overall. He picked up 4 strokes on Mags, but still fell 3 shy of Mags who took second place honors. But the HUGE anomaly of the event was Fox's final round. Shocking! I don't think it has EVER happened in the history of this pool, which has run for decades. Fox had only 2 players going in the final round, so that meant that he had to eat a 79 for one of his players (Rose's worst score of the day). But despite that.... HE TIED FOR FIRST PLACE FOR THE DAY!!!!!! Freaking AMAZING!!!!!! But check this out.... while no one else in our pool bested an even par 71 for the day, his two golfers... Oostie and Molinari.... shot 69 and 66!!!! The odds of that happening are ASTRONOMICAL, to have only 2 golfers, being forced to eat an 8 over par 79, and still be low for the day. Those two outliers were 7 under par when no one else broke par. And he had them both. I assure u.... it will NEVER happen again. This was akin to Man landing on the Moon and the Mets winning the World Series within a few months of each other 50 years ago. One lucky bleeper, for sure, Gabes, u are right!!!!! So that was our big excitement for the week. This tourney sucked. Glad I was busy most of the weekend. Played some golf w/ my old buddies in Westchester (getting ready for Saratoga), boat rides on the Hudson w/ friends to beat the heat, and connecting w/ my son, his lovely lady and her folks for a nice late lunch on the way back home. Congrats, Andy, on a big $$$ week.
