PGA 2018 Albert's Majors Pool Day 1 Interesting first day at Bellrive. Fowler posted an early 65.... and that held up for a long time. Until Gary Woodland went wild and shot 64! Alas, Ikey did not start him… not even his first alternate. And the guys Ikey DID start did not play very well... he sits in last, 6 over. Like I said in The British Open, I post the scores top to bottom. And Gabes boys posted an impressive 9 under 341. That held up until Fox's Foxes tied him. But the last player in the list of nine... Mags... squeaked past both by 1 little stroke, 10 under 340. And once again, Stewart Cink was a critical contributor... his 67 got Mags from 6 under to 9 under, and then Chappel's 69 gave him his one stroke win. Hans, Andy and Jack are close behind... my team disappointed yet again but didn't blow themselves out of the event quite yet, 8 strokes off the pace. Sobo and Ikey are 13 and 16 back, respectively. Andy's Ooostie did not start, so his first alternate plays. Days 2, 3 Sorry, boys. Rain delay on Fri created some issues and I was crazy busy with Lauren's family, and our family here to see them. Fun day but non-stop. OK.... first of all... what a fun tourney to watch! Wow, just about all the big guns were in contention. Woods, of course, lights up the ratings dial for CBS... but two days in a row his hot start on the front side (4 under both times) were followed by tepid back nines (even). For the tourney, he is -10 front, +2 back. Like the British, he is only a little back... but he is going to need a COMPLETE round to pass the quality players in front of him. I don't suspect that there is the intimidation factor in his favor any longer... guys like Brooks Koepka, Adam Scott, Justin Thomas, Jason Day and Jon Rahm know no fear. All are Major Winners. They may not play great today... but I suspect that each will play their own game and not be concerned with some noise that Tiger might make in front of them. But if he goes 4 under again on the front, Jim Nantz, and all of CBS, may get apoplectic. OK, on to our pool. I am going to make this about me for a minute or two.... If I didn't have bad luck, I would have no luck at all. Lurking after Day 1, Koepka and Scott play super on Day 2. But JB Holmes bogeys the last hole, and misses the cut by 1. Garcia DB's the 16th, and misses the cut by 1. I end up tied w/ Hans that day for second.... could have had second outright. With Reed also missing the cut, I only have 3 golfers going on Sat. They all shoot lights out... 11 under combined. But with no 4th golfer, I have to eat a 5 over 75, and I miss first for the day by 3 and second by two. And that is why they call me Mr. Loser. On to our winners... Sobo edged both me and Hans on Day 2 by 4 strokes and came back to respectability after a bad Day 1. Mags and Hans topped the leaderboard after 2 days with Gabes hot on their heels. Note the number of players in the table below who Made Cut (MC) Day 3, Mags saw Kisner slip w a 72 but his secret weapon, Stewart Cink, came thru for him again! Cink shoots 66 and Mags edges Sobo for Day 2 honors, Hans and I 1 and 2 more back. So overall, Mags leads by 4 over Hans and 8 over Sobo. I am 9 back but will not be able to compete against 5 man teams with another 75 (or higher) auto assigned. Gabes 5 man team, one stroke behind me, is a far greater threat to catch the Top 3 and Jack, only 6 behind Sobo, is far from out of it. So the only solace I have in this thing is that there are two Dimpled Balls atop the leaderboard. Koepka has a 2 stroke lead on Adam Scott, who I 1 stroke clear of third and one or two strokes ahead of some of the greatest players in golf. Should be a wild finish. And if one of my guys doesn't win, I guess I would like to see Fowler finally come thru and get that monkey off his back. Day 4 The roars for Tiger are still echoing around Bellrive…. but his wayward drive on 17 pretty much sealed the deal that he would come close, but not yet win a Major in the last 10 years. And Brooks Koepka has one more chip to put on those huge shoulders…. winner of US Open + PGA in the same year, winner of 3 of the last 6 Majors he has played... and still playing second fiddle to someone he beat by 2 strokes. He missed numerous birdie putts down the stretch that would have made his final walk all the simpler... but his shot making under pressure was amazing. As Gabes might say... "Him a man!" So I win 3 of 4 Major skins while not sniffing anything in the overall pool. Amazing. As for our Pool.... Sobo took Day 4 honors, besting Mags by 3 strokes, but Mags cruises to a 5 stroke overall win. Hans easily bests Gabes for third. My work here in 2018 is done. See u at the Masters next April.
