Masers 2018 - Albert's Pool Day 1 Thx for letting me draft two unpicked losers. They shot 79 and 78... and weren't even worst on my team. The defending Champion. my Sergio, created history with a freaking 13 on the par 5 15th for an 81. Andy led the way, up a stroke over Ikey. Gabes and Sobo lurk a few behind. And Hans made a great call hanging on to Finau, who was -4 on that bad ankle. Day 2 Interesting Day 2. While neither Woods nor Mickelson impressed today, some very solid performances by some major stars like Thomas, McIlroy, Reed, Leishman, Fowler, etc. Gabes and Jack tied for Day 2 honors. Fox was 1 back, and I was 1 more. I managed to squeeze past Mags into next to last... but NO CHANCE of challenging over the weekend, so I'll sit back and root for Reed and a major skin at this point. Day 3 In one of the great all time Daily performances, Gabes' team SMOKED the balance of the field, beating the nearest competitors by a whopping EIGHTEEN strokes. He had a 68, a 66 and two 65's, bringing him in 24 strokes under par. Jack, Hans and Fox all tied for second at 6 under. I was one stroke away from splitting second place money 4 ways instead of three. Whoop de dam doo. Gabes has a rocking chair lead overall, 21 strokes. So his only interest today will be in seeing if Rory can make up three strokes on Reed, win the career Grand Slam and, more importantly for Gabes, win him a Major skin. Given how my golf roto season has gone to date, I am not expecting Reed to hold up well to the pressure of going for his first major against a highly motivated McIlroy, still perhaps the most talented guy on tour. But I will say this... as talented as McIlroy is, he was INCREDIBLY lucky yesterday on two different holes that would have otherwise had Reed strolling to an easy win today. First, on Par 5 #8, he missed badly to the right, had little green to work with, and the green slopes severely away from him. His shot was flying like a rocket when it hits the pin DEAD CENTER and drops into the cup for eagle. By his own admission afterward, he said that the ball would not have even stayed on the green had it not hit the pin. A swing of 2, maybe even three strokes. And then on 13, he pulls his second shot into the azaleas. It was a miracle that he could even find the ball.... and then even be able to get a club on it, and get it back in play. Had he been forced to take stroke and distance, or not been able to get out of the flowers, would have been at least bogey and likely worse. But he gets it out, then on, then in for a very lucky par. He should easily be 6-7 back instead of just three. Reed is street fighter.... great match player. And he did beat McIlroy head to head in last Ryder Cup, with McIlroy playing very well. But if the two leaders falter as they play in the final group, watch out for Jon Rahm. The man-child is a BEAST. Fowler is actually a shot closer than Rahm but his Sundays at Majors have left a lot to be desired. Anyway, should be a great show. Day 4 Wow, that was fun. Reed is holding off a sluggish McIlroy.... and here comes Spieth! Then here comes Fowler! Those last gtwo made GREAT comebacks, and put the pressure on Reed that Rory didn't. Reed's putt on 17.... then Fowler birdies 18, forcing another Reed par on 18. Very slippery first putt... 3.5 feet to win the Masters. Nice. Spieth coming back from the dead was a bigger story. Fowler breaking thru with a GREAT back nine was the next best story. But Reed holding them all off wasn't too bad.... and he is a Dimpled Ball, after all For our pool... Gabes cruises to an easy win. Jack and Fox tie for second/third... Ikey one stroke out of the money. For Day 4, Ikey was our easy winner. Just needed one more stroke along the way. And Fox was second. Sobo will manage all $$$. C u... literally, in many cases... at the US Open.
