British Open 2018 Al's Major Pool Day 1 Nothing worse than running these freaking pools and finding that u r out of it on Day 1. It BLOWS!!!!But as a good Zahmbie, I will soldier on and report the results. Hans smoked the field on Day 1, winning by 5 strokes over Mags, who rode Kisner's 65 to a second place finish. Everyone but me is chasing third. As for the event... can the Brits figure out how to irrigate their courses? The only thing green was the GREENS. Fairways were like pavement. Nobody interesting on the leaderboard. I watched this am... but will be playing early tomorrow am. Expect a more detailed description of my round rather than the Open. Will ,likely be more interesting. Day 2 It sucks being me. Reed misses an easy putt on 18. Garcia doubles 16 to miss the cut by 1, and Uhlein also misses by 1. And my team misses second for the day by 1 stroke, and with only 3 golfers on the weekend, I have no vested interest in this thing on the weekend. Hans takes Day 2 and opens a huge lead. Ikey takes second place today, beating me by 1. The race for second overall is very tight. But Mags, Ikey, Andy and Sobo have 5 going on the weekend, Hans 4 and the rest 3. Day 3 Hans team posted another solid day.... his remaining 4 men going -5, 279. But two teams went REALLY low on Sat. Sobo's boys, led by a pair of 65's from Spieth and Molinari, went -14, 270. But that was still not quite good enough to take Day 3 honors. Mags' team bested them by 1, with Rose and Woods (64 and 66) matching the scores of Spieth and Molinari, with Kisner's 68 and Cink's 71 edging Sobo's last two by 1. So as we head into the last day, Hans still leads, but that 12 stroke margin is now down to 2, Mags right behind, and Sobo lurking 4 strokes further back. Mags and Sobo have the luxury of discarding their worst score today w/ 5 players in the field... Hans has to count all 4 of his. Andy also has 5 alive and has a chance to crack the top 3 with a big final day. U guys can't know how much it BBBLLLOOOWWWSSSSS to do all this work and submit these reports when your team has blown itself out of contention on Day 1, and u don't even have 4 golfers going on the weekend to try to at least grab a daily prize. So I hope it is appreciated!!!!! :-) Day 4 For a tourney that lacked juice at the outset, this turned into a interesting and fun weekend, both for real as well as our pool. TONS of great names on the leaderboard by Sat evening, and some great possible story lines. Woods ending his drought and getting his 15th? Spieth getting his 4th major before 25, and consecutive Opens? McIlroy taking it to the house? Kisner breaking thru on a big stage? Schauffle makling his mark? Woods was on the lead alone at one point... wow. Would have been his first come from behind Major, astonishingly. And there was a time when if he HAD the lead with 9 to go, it would have been end of story. But he played the back 2 over, Molinari two under with a critical cushion birdie on tough 18th, and we have our first Italian Champion. If Spieth, Schauffele or Kisner shoot par, they win, but all spit the bit. Tough flight home for those boys. And our pool was even more exciting than!!! First.... golf is a self governing game, and this pool is as well. So kudos to Mags for pointing out that I shave a stroke for his team Day 1. Kisner shot 66, not the 65 I gave him. I assured Mags that I would not assess a penalty for his signing an incorrect scorecard. Mags still takes second place honors fopr that day but it dropped him one further back from Hans and got Sobo one stroke closer. To further set the stage, remember that Hans' 4 man team's 12 stroke lead was shaved to small single digits to strong play of Sobo and Mags' 5 man teams on Saturday. To help u appreciate how I saw all this unfolding.... I complete the sheet top to bottom, starting w Gabes and ending w/ Mags, top golfer to last golfer within each team. So when I get to Sobo, I see that his stud Spieth shoots a fat 76.... he's meat, right? But his other 4 golfers inc Molinari play 3 under, 281 for the day. Solid! Hans had a six shot lead on Sobo…. but while List and Finau came in -2, his top guns Z Johnson and Schauffele came in +6.... and his 288 puts Sobo up by one! My last set of entries is Mags. Rose and Woods quickly have him -2.... but then I add Kim and Kisner's collective 5 over. And at THAT point, Mags sits 2 behind Hans and 3 behind Sobo. He has one golfer left for me to post..... Stewart Cink… his last entry in the six man roster.... a has been... the creep who stole the Claret Jug away from Old Tom Watson. This VERY LAST entry for the week would tell the tale... and to my amazement, Cink shoots 70, a 4 stroke differential from KIsner's 74, and Mags takes a ONE STROKE victory after calling that one stroke penalty on himself and me. So Sobo and Mags take Day 4 honors while the final finish is Mags, Sobo and Hans. Andy lurker throughout foir a strong 4th but clould not break thru even in daily honors, IKey being the only one to break the hold of the triumvirate. Big $$$ for our top three. Sobo will happily book these numbers, and I'll see u at the PGA. Hopefully I can have at least 4 men on the weekend, because this BBBLLLOOOWWWSSSS! I am sure that Gary will want to edit every cell entry given the narrow loss and my error on Day 1. :-) Al Cink! Cink! Cink! Albert, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you running this pool, even if your team does blow. Mags Nice Job Al - always enjoying to watch The Open early mornings, Not surprised that my 4 standing for the weekend could not withstand the larger teams. The PGA is what, three weeks away? Here we go again. Hans Audit it? I'm thrilled to finally be in the black in a major! Book it, Danno. And you should have been partying yesterday! Florence probably made her feast and an Italian won the Open! Sobo
