Masers 2016 - Albert's Pool Day 1 As always, a fun watch though most of the fireworks came early w/ Spieth lighting it up w/ a 66 and is two strokes clear of the field. Looked like Day would be right there with him late in the afternoon, but he gave up 5 strokes on 15 thru 17, highlighted by a triple on 16. Bubba faltered badly on the back as well, 5 over 41 w/ 5 bogeys plus a DB on 16. Biggest shocker was Fowler... he recovered from DB on 1 with 3 quick birdies, looked like he would be a force to be reckoned with. But somehow lost it totally on the back, 8 over 44 for an 80. Ouch! He didn't even beat my old piece of shit, Bowditch, who got in w a 79. Lowry is up on the leader board at 4 under... but not on Mags' 5 man team as he put Jim Pee Wee Herman on the tee. Didn't embarrass himself with a 74, but Mags is your Day 1 winner had Lowry been playing instead of either Herman or Kisner. But we do have a Day 1 winner, and that is Mr. Hansen, who edges Andy by a single stroke. Snedeker and Piercy came in at 3 under to support Spieth's 6 under, and Kaymer's 74 didn't hurt too badly.... Like Streb's 81 would have had it counted. Andy's team was more balanced, ranging 69 to 72 for the best 4, and Schwartzel's 76 hasn't blown him out of the weekend just yet. As an aside, my team of 4 men would have finished tied w/ Mags at 2 under 286 on the strength of Rose's 69 and all others at 1 over. Day 2 Boys, these guys suck. What a choke-fest during round two, none worse than my boy Phil. Three putted from 3 feet on 13, in honor of Ernie. That was after bogeys on 10 and 11. Then he doubles 16 and 16 to miss the cut by a stroke. But he is outdone by my Zach Johnson, who seemed to have survived the cut despite a shitty 78. But wait!!!! Someone detects that his blade grazes the water as he takes a backswing from the hazard, he is assessed a 2 stroke ex post facto penalty, and MISSES the cut!!! I am going to take it up the ass for my weekly number but at least I saved $35 in the Majors pool. OK.... Here is the story of the day. Sobo took it up the ass Day 1. But ALL the members of his team played well Day 2, he not only takes Day 2 honors, but ALL his guys survive the cut and play the weekend. Sticking with the last shall be first theme, Fox, who was next to last on Day 1, finishes second on Day 2. But our model of consistency is Hans, one stroke behind Fox on Day 2, but opens a 4 stroke lead on Andy overall With best three scores counting, Sobo has all five going. Gabes and Mags are on the downside of that equation.... They have three going, so all must play well. All others have 4 going. Day 3 Let's hear it for Smylie Kaufman. Thx to Spieth spitting the bit, going three over on last two, we have a funday tomorrow w/ my younf schmuck in the last group. I heard his interview... dumb as a box of rocks, he stands no chance. On to our pool.... Willo wins day 3, Fox one stroke behind, and the resurgent Sobo just one back of second. Hans still leads by 4, like Spieth, lots of folks on his heels. Day 4 Pretty shitty final round today. I was shocked at Spieth's meltdown on 10-12, 6 over on those holes after opening a 5 stroke lead. Willet played well.... But no excitement. Classic play by Westwood, after his eagle on 15, getting within 1, then makes bogey on the easy pin on 16. And then there is DJ.... Had a solid eagle oppty on 15, missed that and missed birdie on 16. Did Smylie break 80? Not sure... they stopped showing him on about #9. OK, on to our pool.... Paul Casey was Fox's hero, his 67 leading the way to a Day 4 low of 210 and an overall win by a single stroke over Hans. Andy was #2 for the day, as Ikey came up a single stroke short. Andy and Willo tie for third and picj up some beer monet in the process. Everyone but me is in for $35 entry fee, gross winnings below which Sobo will post and maintain. C u all at the US Open.
