US Open 2013 Albert's Majors Side Bet Pool Results thru Rd 3 Sorry, boys. E-mail issues and very busy thru this weekend. But mail is back up, and I am caught up with all the action. So a quick recap... Day 1 Andy and Al tied for first place honors at 3 over par. My team had Sergio come back from 6 over on his opening nine (double/quad on two holes) but Simpson and Scott faded badly down the stretch. Phil's 3 under carried my team, as Andy enjoyed 3 even par rounds from his boys. Day 2 featured higher scoring, and Jack's boys (led by Stenson's 2 under) edged out Gabes' team by two strokes. Day 3 Gabes' team stayed very hot as we entered the weekend... they shot a one over 211. But Andy's boys (led by Fowler's 3 under) came in one stroke better, even par, 210. So as we enter the final round, Gabes hold a 3 stroke lead over Andy. It is another 8 strokes back to Jack. But third place is hotly contested with 3 players within 4 strokes of third place. As far as the tourney itself... wow, what a tightly contested event! Merion has stood up to modern golf after a 32 year hiatus, and it is great to see so many relatively short par 4’s still be challenging to these great players. I love Phil, and would love to see him finally win the Open after 5 second place finishes. But so many great golfers are within 2 strokes ... It is anyone's tourney. Anyone except Tiger Woods, of course... 5 years and counting since his last major. Really hard to believe. And how about Sergio making a freaking TEN on the same hole that he made 8 a few days ago???? He was 8 over par after 6 holes yesterday... came back to play 3 under since then. He is 11 over for the tourney... and 10 over on that hole over 2 days. Woods and McIlroy as non-factors is pretty surprising... Happy Fathers' Day to all, enjoy what should be a great final round. Day 4 Too depressed over Phil's loss to offer much in commentary. But Jack's amazing win on the last day... edging Hans by 1... not only took day 4 honors but had him make up 18 strokes on Gabes to take top honors by 2 over Andy and 3 over the surging Hans. Gabes 227 score was the worst of the day and had him tumble from the top spot out of the money. As for the real tourney... how Mickelson, one of the best wedge players in the game, could bogey two holes from 126 and 121 yards (one from the tee, one from the fairway) is totally beyond me. He made one birdie putt, and missed numerous makeable birdie putts, including 5 footer on 2 and a critical short birdie putt on 16. 6 second place finishes in 23 Opens. This was his to win, w/ the likes of Schwartzel, Donald, Stricker and Mahan all fading. Rose played well... but he was the only one in the final 7 or so, and those two bogeys w/ wedges in hand were the difference. BTW, to be clear, not about the $$$, all about being a Phil fan.
