Albert's notes: Day 1 Andy and I enjoyed a wonderful and historic day at Augusta. Tiger's return was the top story, and his 68 shows he still has what it takes. But how about Tom Watson at 5 under? Tied for lead until another oldie but goodie, Fred Couples, took it on his own at 6 under. Weather was great in the am.... cloudy and windy pm. But while heavy rain was all around the area, we never got more than 10 minute sprinkles/light rain. No real factor to speak of... and the forecast for the balance of the weekend is sunny, dry and cool. My friend Mike Korb arrived this evening and will join me next few days as Andy heads back in the am. But he heads back a happy man, with his team challenging for the lead. But by a single stroke, Hans team takes day 1 honors; Andy will have to settle for second. Gabes: Congrats on having both golfers who shot 80's today. Day 2 The weather was outstanding. But the greens were drier and faster... and the Tourney officials didn;t like all the red numbers from Day 1. So the pin placements today were brutal! #16 was tough... so was #15... but #14 was REALLY tough. Almost funny watching the pros deal with that one. Westwood was 10 under when he reached 14... his DB there put him back in the tie w/ Poulter. Hans team had trouble with those oins and couldn't keep up w/ Andy's boys, who take the lead. But Sobo takes day 2 honors, and Mags boys tie Andy for the day's second best. Hans will have a tough weekend w/ only 3 golfers making the cut. Sobo, Andy and Jack have 5 going, with the best 4 scores counting. The balance have 4 alive... except for Gabes, who has only 2 playing the weekend. Man, his team BBBLLLOOOOWWWSSSSS!!!!!! The Brits look tough. But Woods and Phil two back, w/ the likes of Yang, Choi and Kim all within 3 strokes should make for a fine weekend, w/ the weather cooperating as well. Day 3 What a glorious day at Augusta National. PERFECT weather. Eagles and birdies, by all types... up and comers (Mahan, Kim), the old guard (Couples, Watson), and the elite of the game (Westwood, Woods and Mickelson). The roars on the back nine were fast and furious. I and a friend, Mike Korb, sat by 15 green late in the day, witnessing eagles by Nick Wanted, Kenny Perry (from the bunker) and Fred Couples (chipping in). Woods and Watson made beautiful birdies from behind the green.... VERY tough chip shots from there, so tough to stop the ball. But the best was Mickelson coming within inches of his third consecutive eagle. The crowd was going crazy... great theatre. Westwood held on the lead by 1 over Phil, and Woods is lurking. Should make for a great Sunday. I head home in the am and should catch just about all the action on my HDTV. As for our pool.... Sobo had a great day w/ Jerry Kelly, of all people, leading the way w/ a 67 and Mahan scoring a 68. We had a three way tie for second, with Hans tying Andy and Fox, riding Westwood/Phil 68/67 to offset being assigned an 80 for his 4th player of the day. VERY impressive. Andy stays in front but Hans remains close behind and Sobo and Jack are still in it, for sure. Like I said, should make for a great Sunday. Day 4 Andy smoked the field on the final day and wins the overall pool... congrats, Anj. Hans 3 man weekend team does an amazing job of keeping Hans in the #2 slot against the 5 man teams of Sobo and Jack. And has one of his boys wearing a Green Jacket to boot! Congrats, Hans. And Jack manages a third place finish without being in the money any of the four days... might eba first, but don't think for a second that I am goiung to research that little tidbit. Don't confuse me with the Elias Sports Bureau. If anyone wants the spreadsheets for all Major pools dating back to 2002 to peruse the data to see if jack was the first... I'll send it but I suggest instead you go get a life. Impressive, Jack. Mags, you should have stuck w/ Fox's team, he took second place on the last day. Gabes: While I beat you by 43 points, you and I had one thing in common... we both BBBLLLLOOOWWWWWWW and we both lost the full $35 entry fee. Sobo: The math is all yours. See you all at Pebble Beach where Phil continues his march to the Grand Slam.
