British Open, 2009 Albert's Notes: Day 1: On a day when Turnberry was awash with red numbers, not one F-ing Panza broke par, and my sorry ass team is in last f-ing place. This pool BBBLLLOOOOOWWWWSSSS. OK, that's out of the way. On to the real business of Day 1. Hans' troops, with a pair of 66's by Villegas (OK) and Goggin (who?) take first day honors by a single stroke over Mags and Gabes. Mags, of course, would have won Day 1 easily... but he had the wrong Watson. Bubba shot 73 for Mags... Tom had a 65. I have lost total interest. Look for the next update Sunday after this abortion is over. You all have the sheet. Track it yourself. PS to Jack: Happy Birthday. Your team blows as bad as mine does. Day 2: If you were told that one of greatest golfers of all time, a grad of Stanford, with the initials TW, would be leading the British Open after two rounds, how much would you have bet that the leader would be Tiger Woods? But instead it is Tom Watson, and Tiger misses the cut. MISSES THE FUCKING CUT!!!! Not that he was the only Panza to shit the bed. Poulter, Ogilvy and Sabbatini also missed the cut and I wallow in last place. Fox's team wins day 2 honors and zooms past Gabes into first overall. Gabes is close.... now. But Fox has 5 going over the wekend, Gabes but 3. Andy took second for Day 2, but also has but 3 going on the weekend. Watch out for Sobo and Hans to make a weekend move, at least for second overall, as they both have 4 on the course. Jack: You and I can contemplate our navels this weekend and root for someone not active on a roster to win the event. Maybe like the OTHER TW.... wouldn't it be terrific to watch him win his sixth BO at the ripe old age of 59? Day 4: Fox wins, Sobo second, Hans third. Day 3 to Fox, Hans/Sobo split second. Day 4 to Sobo, Hans and Andy split second. OK... enough of the trivial stuff.... what a shame how this event ended!! Watson birdies 17 to go to 3under... and then Cink makes birdie on 18, when no one had birdied 18 for the last 12 groups or so, to go 2 under. Westwood narrowly misses eagle on 17, and then 3 jerks 18. So it comes down to Watson needing par on 18 to win. Perfect drive. And his 8 iron tracks the flag from the instant it is hit. But whether wind, or adrenaline, or just the cursed fates... the ball refuses to stop, rolls thru the green a few feet wide of the pin, and slides down into the rough. 5 feet shorter, it holds the green and leaves a simple two putt. But not to be. He opts to putt from the rough up the hill... goes about 9 feet past. Was there anyone other than Mrs Cink who didn't want to see him roll that baby in the win of the ages? One thing to miss.... but cheeez... he didn't even hit the damn thing. Off line and short from the get go. Looked like me, for crissakes. So disappointing. Great 4 days... a story that will not be forgotten soon... but should have ended differently. And Mags should not get the $$$ for the major skin.
