Post Draft Musings Roto Baseball 2007 Randy Johnson almost goes undrafted. Tom Glavine... Hall of Fame pitcher... DOES go undrafted, as do the top three starters of the NL East Champions. Jason Varitek... Captain of the BoSox and premiere pick one year ago... is undrafted. And my last two pitchers are on the DL. Al ******************* Guys- Just for the hell of it, it would be interesting to post some self evaluations on the draft. I’m thinking: - pick with most value (not the best player, but the most value for the round selected) - pick with least value (same as above) - which one got away you really wanted Mine are: - Francisco Cordero. Could save 40 for an up and coming Brewers team. Got him in round 11, several rounds later than the top closers - Rocco Baldelli. A decent player, but a reflex reaction after getting triple snakes in round 5 by picks of V.Martinez, Konerko, and McCann. Probably could have got him in round 10. - Aubrey Huff. I think Fox got a steal here in round 20. Could be a 90/30/100/.300 guy. Sobo *********************** Ok Sobo, here are mine: Most value- My last round pick, Cabrera. Could get 14 Ws, 170Ks, and 4.0-4.2 ERA. I'll take that for a Rnd 24 Pitcher. Least value- I guess Tim Hudson, probably could have gotten him 2 rounds later. Al said I should have taken Chien Wang. Oh, but Chien is out for a month I see. Missed- Tie for two guys I hoped to get who went a couple rounds early- Brian McCann and Chuck James. Mags ************************ Ok. For the record, the Mazins: - PIck w/most value - all very risky - Randy Johnson in round 25, Dice K, or Mike Piazza. - Pick w/least value - Probably Mariano Rivera at the time that I took him, or Shane Victorino (Aubrey Huff was still on the board). Sometimes, ya just gotta go for somebody that you want to root for.... - Got away - Alex Gordon (he was 2 away) or Howie Kendricks- he could be a monster. - Pick I'm most concerned about - Chris Duffy. Can he get on base? ************************* Most value: Gary Mathews, Round 24, IF he has the same year as last year. Least value: I’ll be honest, there were a number of choices. Odds are that Frank Thomas and Kenny Lofton will bust. One that got away: Punto. Damn. Prep ************************* Let's see: - pick with most value (not the best player, but the most value for the round selected) Obviously Sobo means "my" pick .. so many of our picks in the mid to late rounds are calculated risks .. injury comebacks .. young players .. players with solid career numbers but coming off a down season. Hmmm .. all in all I thought my last 5 picks, all pitchers, were essentially a toss up so I'll go with my last pick .. Adam Loewen - pick with least value (same as above) Victor Martinez .. there were plenty of other catchers I liked that are probably gonna be close to VM in value and that were available much later. Looking at it, instead of VM I coulda had Peavy or Sheets or Michael Young. - which one got away you really wanted Peavy or Sheets or Michael Young ... or Raul Ibanez .. I started thinking about him in Round 8 and Gabes scooped him up in Round 12 Fox ************************* most valuable will be my 2 catchers - Johnny and Ronny (Estrada and Paulino) after the big names were off the board. or it may be Scott Olsen since I later learned that Sobo was ready to take him least valuable will be my 2 closers - Wickman and Borowski. I got burned in this catagory last year (among many) and chose to de-emphasize this year. the one that got away....I dont remember anyone ruining my day when they were taken off the board..... let the games begin. I will not finish last in 07. Hans
